For the Moms With Seniors Graduating (and the Empty Nest Coming Fast)

First of all… buckle up, moms.

If you’ve got a senior graduating high school, you’re right in that strange in-between place. Not quite empty nest yet, but you can see it coming fast.

And I’ll just say it- it can feel like a bit of a rocky launch.

Life has been full for so long. Sports, carpool lines, practices, school events, late nights, early mornings, always somebody needing something. And then suddenly you’re staring down graduation and realizing… this is it shifting.

It all flies by so fast.

My kids have both graduated now, and even though it’s been several years, I still remember that last stretch of high school being kind of emotional and weird in a way I didn’t fully expect.

Right now I have a lot of friends walking through it- seniors graduating this year, last prom, last games, last everything. Some still have younger kids at home, so they’re not fully stepping into empty nest yet, but there’s still a shift happening whether you’re ready or not.

And here are a few things I wish someone had told me…

It Might Feel Harder Than You Expected

Some moms are ready. Excited even. And that’s fine.

That just wasn’t me.

I wasn’t sitting around waiting for my kids to leave. I liked having them home. I liked the noise and the chaos and all of it. So when things started changing, it felt so uncomfortable.

Because here’s the thing- as moms, we go from managing everything… schedules, meals, school, life, all of it… to suddenly not having much input anymore.

They’re adults now. They make their own decisions. They may or may not ask for your opinion.

And a lot of the time, all you can do is step back and hope everything you poured into them shows up somewhere along the way. And trust God with the rest.

That part was not easy for me. I kind of went through it kicking and screaming if I’m being honest.

So if you’re feeling a little emotional right now leading up to graduation- that’s normal.

Don’t Rush Into “What’s Next”

When our oldest went off to college, I immediately thought I needed to figure out my next thing.

So I went and got a full-time job in communications and marketing for a hotel group.

And I’ll be honest- I learned a lot. There were good parts. There were really hard parts too, especially with COVID happening during that time.

No regrets. But I probably moved too fast.

Because there’s this pressure when the kids leave to immediately fill your life back up again.

Maybe with work.
Maybe with something productive.
Maybe with something that looks like a “next chapter.”

But I think there’s value in slowing down and actually asking yourself what you want life to look like now.

Not what you think you’re supposed to do. Not what fills the time the fastest. Just… what you actually want. Because life changes a lot in this season.

And one thing I didn’t think through was flexibility. I suddenly had more freedom in life, but I was locked into a job that didn’t allow much of it.

So just take your time. You don’t have to decide everything immediately.

Remember the Things You Used to Dream About

This is the part I wish I had done sooner.

At some point, most moms stop thinking about their own dreams because life is full of raising kids.

But then the house gets quieter… and those things start coming back up.

What did you used to want to do?

Not the responsible version. The honest version.

Do you want to travel more?
Do you want to work again or change careers?
Do you want to get healthier?
Do you want to learn something new just because you can?

For me, it’s been gardening and flowers and trying to make our home feel like a little vacation spot that we enjoy year round.

One day I’m dreaming of having a flower farm. The next I’m thinking up how I’m going to turn that spare room into a stylish workout room. I say all of that to point out- you don’t have to have it all figured it.

But I have space to decide what dream I want to chase. And you do too.

Don’t Forget Your People

This is the one thing I feel like I did get right.

When the kids leave, your relationships shift too.

If you’re married, your spouse suddenly has more of you again. And after years of raising kids, that relationship deserves attention too.

My husband and I are best friends, and have always been intentional about having date nights even when the kids were little, but we spend a lot more time together now. The running joke is that I might be giving him too much attention, but I think he enjoys it. 🙂

I’ve also had more time for my sister, friendships, and people I care about in a way I didn’t always have before.

And that part has actually been really good.

So if your senior is graduating this year…

Just know this:

It’s going to feel big.
It might feel emotional.
It might feel a little disorienting.

But you’re going to be okay.

This isn’t the end of your role as a mom- it just looks a little different.

And even if it feels unfamiliar right now, you have a lot of great things coming your way.
